Detroit Lions @ Minnesota Vikings running diary - 1st quarter: I'm already sick of Favre

Some suggested pregame reading:

Detroit4Lyfe has done the math, and have selected the Lions All-Time...fantasy football team. It's a shame Scott Mitchell makes the team, but he does have the best season by a QB in my lifetime, 1995. '97 ranks up there as well.

My good friend and long-time commenter Uncle Omar has asked me to get out the word about Ernie Harwell's HBO interview with Bob Costas at 8 PM on Tuesday. I agree, this is going to be must watch TV. The News has a few excerpts from the upcoming interview. Unfortunately, the news is not good. We're all pulling for you, Ernie.

Today's inactives:

Detroit: Drew Stanton QB, Aaron Brown RB, Anthony Henry CB, Ernie Sims OLB, Daniel Loper G, Ephraim Salaam T, Cliff Avril DE, Landon Cohen DT
Favres: Sage Rosenfels QB, Jaymar Johnson WR, Antoine Winfield CB, Albert Young RB, Erin Henderson OLB, Jon Cooper C, Jayme Mitchell DE, Letroy Guion  DT

Somewhat surprising to see Avril and Cohen inactive, as both played against the Seahawks. The defensive line will be Hunter and White at DE, Hill and Jackson inside.  Loper is once again the odd man out at guard, a position which has been just as much as a revolving door as the defensive backfield. Schwartz's dart must have landed on Jansen's pic today.

I'm LIVE from my so-called home office while Sam Rosen and Tim Ryan are LIVE from the House of Horrors known as the HHH Baggiedome. Vikings win the toss to start what is likely going to be a long, long afternoon for Lions fans.

Percy Harvin starts the day on an end around goos for 7. The more Harvin, the better, as he is starting on my fantasy team today (which counts return yardage, making Harvin a FF monster). I need someone to step up as Jay Cultler just KILLED my team Thursday. Not that you care, but I needed to vent.

A couple of a Favre passes, Taylor and Peterson runs, and the Vikes are already deep into Detroit territory at the 31, facing 3rd and 3.

Lions blitz and are offsides to boot, Vikes easily pick it up, and Favre hits a WIDE OPEN Rice cutting across the middle at the 11. The Lions are putting up next to no opposition. Bad things are going down, man. Bad things...

Lions have stiffened in the red zone, stopping Peterson short of the end zone and knocking down a pass, along with the Vikes begin called for a false start. Peterson gets the ball on a draw, here's a small hole, but the Lions miraculously stop him at the 3.

Longwell nails a chip shot FG, and the Lions are down 3-0 early. Such is life as a Lions fan.

Williams takes the kickoff, there's a BIG hole...but runs into a Viking at the 25. That looked like it should have gone for much more...but the Lions' not-so-special teams are incapable of breaking anything resembling a long kick return.

Did Risen just say "The Lions go on offense led by Matthew Stafford"? Yep, he did. The Lions always get the bottom of the barrel FOX play by play teams.

Kevin Smith breaks off a 12 yard run for a 1st down. Then another for 8, setting up 3rd and short. Smith is running like he read all the Detroit papers saying he's been a massive disappointment this season.

Lions convert on a Stafford to Megatron slant, and are over the 50. But Ray Edwards, for the 2nd time on the drive, shrugs off Churlius, and forces Stafford to just unload the ball. Not a good game for the Lions' young right tackle. He's being chewed up, and spit out.

On 3rd and 10, Jared Allen pressures Stafford, who dumps off a pass 4 yards short of the sticks to Williams. If you are going to throw the ball on 3rd down...throw it past the fucking 1st down marker!

WAIT! The Vikings are offsides on Harris' punt. Guess what? That's a gift 1st down at the Vikes' 35! For some reason, the Vikings often play down to the Lions' level.

On 2nd and 13, Stafford goes to step back to check off a play...and Raiola SNAPS THE BALL! Stafford is damn lucky to even hold onto the ball, and falls down at the line of scrimmage. Christ almighty.

On 3rd and long, the Lions give up, and run a draw to Smith. He gets back to the original line of scrimmage. Wonderful, the Lions are pulling back their offense after last weeks debacle, not giving Stafford a chance to throw deep on 3rd down.

Hanson is on for the 48 yard attempt...and it fucking wide right.

Big Al facepalm

Yep, these are the Lions alright. Shooting a gift drive in the mouth, so to speak. Still 3-0 Vikes.

Favre comes out firing on the Vikes 2nd drive, as a couple of longish completions have the Favres all the way to the Lions' 30. Peterson on a cutback ALMOST breaks it for a TD, a shoestring tackle prevents a TD!

Vikes try some trickeration...Favre inside handoff to Peterson...tries pitching to Harvin for a reverse..BALLBALLBALL! Scramble...who the fuck has it? LIONS RECOVER!

Stafford bootleg gets 5...SHIT. Pettigrew with a totally unnecessary cheap shot block as Stafford runs our of bounds. Fucking moronic. Motherfucking moronic.

Edwards BLOWS past Cherlius on 2nd down, blowing up a screen. Edwards is MANHANDLING the Lions' o-line. He so dominant, it almost looks like he's not being blocked...wait.  It's the Lions' o-line I'm talking about. Edwards really isn't being blocked. What was I thinking?

The Lions give up..again...on 3rd and very long, as Stafford hands off on a delay to Smith as the quarter mercifully runs out of time.

My thoughts on the Lions after one quarter? Need I say more than this?

facepalm!

Nice response for Stafford on that first possession. Calvin should have had that one ball.
Hanson's pissing me off with those missed field goals
