Pittsburgh Steelers @ Detroit Lions running diary - 3rd quarter: So close, yet so far

The Steelers have dominated the stats, but only have a one score lead. I doubt that trend continues in the 2nd half. Cream tends to rise to the top...

curdled

...and the Lions are curdled...

The Lions immediately face a 3rd and short to start the half from their 35. Culpepper to Smith gets the 1st.

With Megatron out, the Lions are down to 3 wide outs. Bryant Johnson, Dennis Northcutt and Derrick Willians. By my math, that's more like 1.5 wide receivers.

Culpepper want to pass on 2nd and long, short drop, holds it....SACK. 3rd and very long, 15.

Culpepper will try to throw for it...it's Pettigrew over the middle for a LEAPING catch at the Steelers 45! Excellent play by Pettigrew, as he was drilled in the ribs while fully extended! Great damn catch!

Smith fumbles on 2nd and long, but Lions recover. 3rd and 8.

Culpepper will drop back...SAC...No! Culpepper's out of the pocket...takes off...1st down! I thought the big man was going to go down a couple of times on the scramble, but he made it to the sticks!

So much for the good feelings...HOLDING on the Lions. Shit. 1st and 20.

Culpepper rolls right...throws for Smith on the run at the 30...DROPPED. GOD DAMN IT!It hit Smith right in the fucking hands. IN THE HANDS!

Culpepper gets some of the penalty yards back on a pass to BJohnson, getting Hanson into FG range.

Hanson kicks what looks like a screwball...and misses JUST wide right. Less than a foot. Ugh. Even Hanson misses 'em occasionally. He's the ONE Lion

Steelers take over at their 39. Mendenhall run, Ward catch, Pittsburgh faces 3rd and 2. Dump off to Moorse converts. Here we go again, folks.

Rotteburrger will go DEEP on 1st down...Uh, oh. Wallace is open between a pair of Lions...catches the ball at the goal line, easy TD. FUCK IT.  Looked as if the Lions defenders had a chance to make a play...and just plain didn't.

28-13 Steelers.

Lions need to make something happen here, or this game will quickly spin out of control...if it hasn't already.

I'm guessing Culpepper's numbers will quickly regress the more he tries to push the ball upfield. He's no longer a mad bomber, he's a dink and dunker.

Just over 5 minutes left in the 3rd, and the Lions quickly find themselves 3rd and 10 after a pair of incompletions.

Culpepper backpeddling...TE SCREEN! Heller crashes his way for the 1st down. I think it's obvious if the Lions give coordinator Scott Linehan more talent, and he's going to make the Lions offense move. He's just needs more weapons and better o-line. That's not too much to ask for, is it?

3rd and 2 from the Lions 42, Culpepper short drop...holds it...RUN GOD DAMMIT! He starts to take off, but sees Northcutt past the sticks...1st down catch! Nice recovery by Culpepper, though I thought he could have ran for the 1st. I'd trust Culpepper's legs over Northcutt's hands any day of the week...

Smith BUSTS up the gut for 10, 1st down at the Steelers 391 Lions on the move, but they NEED more than just a FG attempt. They have to put the ball in the end zone. FUCKING HAVE TO CONVERT.

2nd and 7, and Culpepper has to burn a TO with 1:34 left in the 3rd. That's going to cost them, I'm sure of it.

Culpepper wants to go DEEP...looks in the end zone...JUST overthrows a double covered BJohnson. Risky call, but I liked it.

3rd and long...Felton on the DRAW? And it gets the 1st down! Nice call!

Culpepper is in the gun...DROPS THE SNAP...picks it up...starts scrambling as he's pressured...throws off his back foot...THIS IS NOT GONNA END WELL...and it's picked at the 22. Culpepper didn't get enough on a ball he wanted to throw away, and ended up throwing it up for grabs instead. Fucking stupid play by a VETERAN.

PLAY STANTON!

Steelers get 7 on a pass to Ward, and the quarter ends with Lions fans feeling something quite familiar.

CRUSHING DISAPPOINTMENT.

Steelers lead 28-13 as we stumble into the 4th quarter.

FUCK!

Culpepper I guess shouldn't start

What a fucking dumb play by a "veteran" QB. He fucks up handling the snap, so what does he do? throw it up for grabs, couldn't even throw it out on his own side of the field. Great job dumbass.

Well said, Josh. Take the sack, throw it into the turf, punt the SOB, I don't care. Anything but do exactly what Culpepper did...throw it up for fucking grabs.

I might expect such outright stupidity from young QB's like Stafford or Stanton, but from Culpepper? He should be benched on general principle.
