When I heard about the latest misadventure (passed out drunk in his car in the middle of the afternoon) regarding the Detroit Lions' former number one pick, Charles Rogers, I knew I'd have to write about it. But what would I say that hasn't already been said by myself and others? So I sat on the subject for a day.
The no longer a kid, 28 year old Rogers is a walking train wreck, and desperately needs help of some sort. To add more of my typical snark filled commentary, I'd only be piling on at this point. As if the Lions suing him for millions, and this latest stumble surely killing whatever chance, however small, he had of getting back into football, aren't enough.
In other words, the fall of Charles Rogers from the heights of NFL riches to down on his luck addict is no longer funny, just sad. Even more so when you remember he has 7 kids. Which is why this post is taking a more serious tone.
This latest slip up confirms Rogers still hasn't realized he's his own worst enemy. He has a substance abuse problem, be it pot, booze, or whatever he can get his hands on. Anything he's said in the past about getting help and staying sober, especially in the recent ESPN piece, has been nothing but lip service. Rogers has yet to hit rock bottom, and I have a feeling his latest bust is just another stop on the way to a bad end.
I honestly hope Charles Rogers somehow gets his life together, and I never hear anything about him ever again.
But between you and me, I doubt he can, and I'm sure we will.
