Per Chris Mortensen at ESPN, via the usual suspects:
On the surface a trade that proposes sending Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Corey Williams to the Detroit Lions on Friday may not seem like a big deal. But it could influence the NFL draft on April 22 with the Lions choosing second overall.
If Willliams lands with the Lions for a low draft pick, as sources say, he is expected to return to the role he played with his original team, the Green Bay Packers, which allowed him to play a more aggressive style which is commonly called a three technique. The Packers designated him as a franchise player in 2008 but traded him to the Browns for a second-round draft pick.
John Niyo at the News has confirmed the deal is essentially done, pending Williams' physical,, and believes the Lions are giving up a 5th round pick.

As you can see, Browns fans weren't happy with Williams. Apparently, the feeling was mutual...
I'm not one for bad teams trading those precious commodities known as draft picks, as you could tell from my previous post. But when the pick to be traded is (hopefully) a 3rd day selection, and the player in question has a track record (14 sacks in 2006-07) of being a solid pass rush specialist (as a DT, which isn't exactly common), I have no problem with the Lions making the trade.
It's thought the reason for Williams drop in sacks is due to injury in '08 and the Browns going to a 3-4 defense in '09. I tend to trust Jim Schwartz when it comes to evaluating defensive players, and it he thinks Williams is still worth the considerable amount of cash he's owed ($4.2 million, $4.9 million, $4.9 million and $5.4 million through 2013, not exactly chump change), I'm willing to take the leap.
If, as expected, the Lions draft either Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh or Oklahoma's Gerald McCoy, sign another defensive lineman in free agency (such as the Titans' Kyle Vanden Bosch or the Packers' Aaron Kampman), and factor in holdovers DT Sammie Lee Hill and DE Dewayne White? The Lions' defensive line may actually become a factor in games! What a foreign concept for Lions fans...let alone the Lions themselves.
Will GM Martin Mayhew's master plan for fixing his defense come to fruition? Free agency has opened of 12:01 AM today, and the draft is 7 weeks away.
We'll need to exercise patience. The game of chicken with other NFL has just begun...
